What Is Constipation?

Constipation is the medical term used for less than 3 bowel movements per week. However, how often you “go” varies widely from person to person. Some people have bowel movements several times a day while others have them only one to two times a week. Whatever your bowel movement pattern is, it’s unique and normal for you – as long as you don’t stray too far from your pattern.

Whenever one deviates from their bowel pattern and the stool becomes hard and difficult to pass, such a condition of uneasiness is called constipation in general means.

COMPLICATIONS OF CONSTIPATION

If left untreated, constipation can give rise to many diseases and infections inside the body. Regular bowel movements are the body’s way of removing toxins, metabolized hormones, and waste from the body. When you are constipated these chemicals sit idle in the intestines and are absorbed back into the blood for flow. Constipation in the body may cause bloating, acne, loss of appetite etc. This produces inflammation in the gut and other digestive ailments, such as gas, pain, allergies, and food sensitivities. Yeast overgrowths also encourage itchy skin, vaginal yeast infections, fungal infections, and much more.

CAUSES OF CONSTIPATION

Lack of fiber in diet, drinking less water, poor food choices, stress, no or less exercise and disturbed sleep patterns are some major factors contributing to constipation in one’s body. Many times our regular medicines that we take for hypothyroidism,blood pressure, anemia, diabetes cause irregular bowel patterns. Medicines like painkillers, anti-anxiety or antidepressant pills, antacids, NSAID (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs) may also cause constipation in about 70% of people consuming them. Constipation is a very common issue during pregnancy as well.

Easiest way to treat and prevent this condition is to alter your lifestyle and eating habits. Starting with light exercises on a regular basis, maintaining mental stability and setting reminders to reach your water goal for the day are a few basic things to start at home for constipation.
